Analyze The Social Economy Condition of Indonesian Migrant Workers, the Way to Improve the Welfare : A Case Study in Hongkong

Abstract

Indonesian Migrant Workers (TKI) spread across the world almost seven million people in 2016. Migration brings positive impact to the life of migrant workers on economics and social side. It also brings the same life for their families and countries of destination and origin. One of the main destination countries is Hongkong. This study aims to identify and to map the social economic conditions of TKI, and also to analyze the welfare of TKI in Hongkong. The study uses sequential mixed method. It is the combination of quantitative and qualitative methods. The analytical tool consists of the spatial analysis of Geographic Information Systems (GIS), regression analysis
and the analysis of phenomenology. GIS analysis is the in form of mapping of the social economic conditions of migrant workers in Hongkong by a gathering place with the crowded theory. The data is divided into three main themes. The first is the origin of migrant workers, there are the origin of the province, rural or urban and the type of work in Indonesia. The second are education, experience, age, and number of family members. The last is the cost of living. The regression analysis using remmitance sent to Indonesia as a proxy for the welfare of migrant workers as the dependent variable. The results shows that the remittance are significantly influence by income, education level, number of family members, plan retirement age and the cost of living , but the variables of age, experience, and cost workers abroad, has no effect on Remmitance. Both of the results are explained qualitatively by phenomenological analysis. The results shows that there are some non-economic variables that affect the level of welfare among others. The are culture, geographic, non-formal education, family situation and future expectations shown by the plan after retirement, influence perception on improving the welfare of migrant workers.

Rural Tourism in Ponorogo East Java Indonesia

Abstract

Rural tourism is one of the prominent programs of Ministry of Culture and Tourism in Indonesia. Since 2011, the program has been integrated into the national agenda for empowering the community-based tourism called “Pemberdayaan Masyarakat Mandiri Pariwisata”. This program has been implemented widely as one of the economic activities to improve regional income. This research aimed at identifying and analyzing the possibilities of the three villages in District of Ponorogo, East Java Province of Indonesia to be selected as rural tourism areas, and the program will be funded by the local government. The three villages are located near the popular tourism destination in Ponorogo, i.e., Jurug, Ngebel and Gondowido. Five main aspects have been surveyed in each village: economic activities, local products, agriculture potencies, forestry (environment), and cultural and social life of the people. The five main elements of tourism destination ─ attraction, accessibility, amenities, tourist package, and ancillary services have also been identified. Survey, focus group, observation, and interview with the participants representing the stakeholders were conducted to collect the empirical data, and the data were further analyzed based on the SWOT. The study found that Jurug village is poised to become a rural tourism destination as compared to the other two villages ─ Ngebel and Gondowido. Some environmental problems were also found at Ngebel, which negatively impact the life of people surrounded.

The Analysis of Community Empowerment Process through Poor Community Group (The Comparative Study of Pilot and Replication Areas)

Abstract

Objective – The objectives of this study are to find out how to empower the poor through community groups (Pokmaskin) at Wukirsari village. The second objective is to create a model for community empowerment with the basic of comparative for pilot and replication area.
Methodology/Technique – The first method is Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) to analyse the factors that affect the community empowerment through poor society in the pilot areas and the area will be used replication analysis. The second method will use qualitative method with Focus Group Discussion and in-depth interview to answer how the empowerment model that is right for the poor in urban and rural areas. FGD involve various stakeholders in the area of both the elements of society, leaders, NGOs and government.
Findings – The result showed that the factors which is the most influenced on the community development as perceived by members of community groups in the pilot and replication areas are, internal factors, institutional factor and external factor. Increasing the internal factor with increased motivation main target group members in the community empowerment; increasing institutional support in the form of legality, the role of local government, support from community leaders, encourages community motivation, formed to develop the organization; and empower all stakeholders, especially the private sector to provide support in training, financial, increase production and marketing.
Novelty – The study uses Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) and Focus Group Discussion to reach the results.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the relationships, power, and influence among stakeholders and analyse their role in the post placement empowerment of Indonesian migrant workers. This study further intends to analyse the existence of convergence and divergence between stakeholders. The sequential explanatory mixed method was employed, with Matrix of Alliance and Mactors used as the tools for analysis, with 13 stakeholders and 8 objectives. The findings of this research revealed that the actor with the most influential and low-reliance role is academics. Four objectives were positively accepted by all stakeholders, while the remaining four entailed ambiguous acceptance; both positive and negative responses were received. The analysis of convergence and divergence demonstrates that stakeholders tend to cluster according to similarity of interests. The central implication of this study is that education may serve as the driver that is acceptable to all parties, and the role of education should be considered during the formulation of empowerment formulas.

Stakeholder Role in Improving Agribusiness Efficiency and Food Security in Developing Countries

Abstract

Purpose: Food security is one of the main goals for sustainable development having an important position in determining the government policies. The main objective of this study is to analyze the role of stakeholders in corn farming business efficiency by 1) analyzing the efficiency of small-scale corn farming in Grobogan Regency, Central Java and 2) analyzing the role of stakeholders in increasing food security.
Design/methodology/approach: The study used a mixed method, a combination of quantitative and qualitative analysis. The analytical tool used was Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA), regression analysis, and stakeholder analysis with a focus on convergence
and divergence among stakeholders.
Findings: The calculation results show that as many as 18 (30%) corn farming has been efficient. The main stakeholders’ role was found between the Agriculture office and farmers’ associations.
Practical implications: The results show a close relationship and communication among actors. Furthermore, the actors share the same objectives so that the convergence path is mutually supportive and synergistic.
Originality/value: The study provides a new discourse in an effort to improve agricultural efficiency in developing countries by analyzing the closeness between actors and modeling farmers’ access to agricultural resources and governance.

Model of Port Management to improve the Service Quality for Passengers

Abstract

This research aims are to analyze the demand for service quality by analyzing the relationship among actors in the port and the port management model to create excellent service for passengers. This research was conducted in Tanjung Emas Port in Semarang, one of the biggest seaports in Indonesia. The actors involved in the port management consist of port management, port filed officer, entrepreneur, ticket agent and passengers. The method used is the sequential mixed method, which combines qualitative and quantitative methods in sequence. Furthermore, the data analysis was done by using the software of atlas.ti, combined with stakeholder analysis and triangle analysis with in-depth interview and Focus Group Discussion (FGD). The results show that the some aspects obtain more concern from respondents about improving port quality such as port eligibility, facilities and comfortability, accessibility, and port security.

IMPROVING SERVICE EXCELLENCE ON PASSENGER SHIPS IN INDONESIA

Abstract

This study aims to (1) analyse ship passengers’ profiles and their perceptions ofbservice excellence from sea transportation services; (2) analyse the efficiency of passengernship routes; (3) measure willingness to accept of ship passengers.This research uses  sequential mixed methods with ATLAS.ti, Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA), and Willingness ito Accept (WTA) as the analytical instruments. The results show that the majority of ship passengers were from low economic groups, who chose sea transportation for its convenience and facilities. DEA calculations show that 6 ship routes were efficient while the other 14 routes were inefficient. WTA of multimodal users reached 14.3%.It can be concluded that the improvement of service excellence for ship passengers is highly dependent on passenger profiles, ship service and facilities, ship efficiency and affordable ticket prices.
